Questions to Ask Your Wedding Venue
Don't sign a contract until you have answers to these. Save each Venue's answers, rate your gut feeling and compare them side by side. Everything goes into your free Happily Ever Iowa wedding plan.
See all 23 questions to ask a wedding venue, with why each one matters
1. Is my date available, and do you have a hold policy?
Ask if you can place a soft hold for 24-48 hours while you check with family.
2. What is the max seated capacity?
Make sure it fits your guest list comfortably with a dance floor.
3. What is included in the rental fee?
Tables, chairs, linens, setup, cleanup, staff, a day-of coordinator?
4. Are there vendor restrictions?
Are you required to use their catering, bar or a preferred vendor list?
5. What is the rain plan?
Crucial for outdoor ceremonies. Where does everything move, and when do we decide?
6. What are the access hours?
When can decorators arrive? When must the music end and everyone be out?
7. How is alcohol handled?
BYOB with a licensed bartender, or in-house bar only? Any corkage fee?
8. Are there hidden service fees?
Ask about "++" (tax and service charge), which can add 25-30%.
9. Is security or insurance required?
Some venues require off-duty officers or event insurance when alcohol is served.
10. Is there a getting-ready suite?
A bridal suite on site keeps the morning simple.
11. What is the deposit and payment schedule?
Most vendors take 25-50% to hold your date. Get the balance due date in writing.
12. What is your cancellation and reschedule policy?
Know what you get back (and what you lose) if the date moves.
